Profile
Mr. Rice specializes in handling civil appeals and writ petitions. He is admitted to practice in the United States Supreme Court and most of the federal Circuit Courts of Appeals, and he has participated in matters before appellate courts of many states. Mr. Rice coordinates appellate litigation for a major foreign motor vehicle manufacturer throughout the United States in products liability and class action matters.
In addition to handling matters in the appellate courts, Mr. Rice is also regularly involved in trial strategy and major trial court briefing on behalf of defendants in class actions and other complex litigation matters. His role is to assist in obtaining advantageous rulings in the trial court and to position the case for possible appeal however the trial court proceedings are ultimately resolved. He specializes in service and other jurisdictional challenges and discovery issues on behalf of foreign clients, as well as other cross-border issues.
Mr. Rice also assists clients in evaluating issues that might some day require litigation. His goal is often to determine how to avoid litigation. This role includes analyzing insurance coverage exposure for the firm’s major insurance company clients.
